Well, Is It a Boy Or a Girl?

Jan/Feb 2014 Touchstone
The January / February 2014 issue of Touchstone

Our 11th grandchild, James Patrick, was born this past Monday, June 23. I was pleased to see that his birth certificate had a category marked SEX and correctly designated him as "male" under that category. (Not "male" as to "gender.") Everyone wants to know when you've had a baby: "Is it a boy or a girl?" Which sex?

R. V. Young has noted:

Latin provides the root (sexus or secus, probably from "cut" or "sever," but more pertinently to "divide" or "halve") for the English word "sex" and for its Romance language equivalents.

Two things immediately stand out in the biblical account of the creation of Man: First, Man is created in the image of God; second, Man, that is, mankind, is comprised of male and female, that is, two sexes.

Satan was envious of Man's creation. He attacks Man's design: first, as a sacred being made in God's image, and second, as embodied in both the male or female sex. For this reason I view much of the modern sexual agenda as demonic, as well as idolatrous because of its rejection of God's creation in favor of whatever we want to make, or pretend to make of it.

And we may pretend many things, as did the Nazis pretend that non-Aryans were subhuman. "Gender" has become so fluid that Facebook pretends there are now 57 (or is it 58?) choices for gender. A recent article at argues against assigning any "gender" (i.e., sex) at all to any newborn, pretending male and female babies don't exist.

In this context, let us briefly consider even this non-Christian wisdom: Confucius. (Okay, this is from Wikipedia:)

Confucius believed that social disorder often stemmed from failure to perceive, understand, and deal with reality. Fundamentally, then, social disorder can stem from the failure to call things by their proper names, and his solution to this was the rectification of names.

I agree, and such disorder is on display today. And Touchstone journal stands firm on such disputed issues as sex vs. gender because its editors believe in created reality, that is, God-given and not merely evolving fluctuations—specifically those realities revealed in Genesis: the sanctity of life and the sanctity of marriage. We will not bend to deviant fashions or political correctness. We stand under God in these matters and will defend them to the end, God help us!

I invite you to please join and help us in our work by making a tax-deductible contribution today. Time is running out as we must make up a $30,000+ deficit by June 30. Any gift—$25, $50, $500, $2,500—will assist and encourage the troops as we defend vital truths. Your on-line donation can be securely made here.

Thank you!

Yours for Christ, Creed & Culture,
